An Iowa man and his wife say they were held at gunpoint by police while speeding to the hospital after the wife went into labor. Now, they may also face criminal charges.
Reports say that Ben and Rachel Kohnen were speeding to the hospital in the middle of the night because Rachel started going into labor. Ben and Rachel say they were going 30 miles over the speed limit and that an officer did put on his lights to pull them over, but they were terrified of having the baby in the car, so they kept driving.
“I did tell him not to stop,” admitted Rachel.
Rachel says she tried to call 911 while her husband was driving to let them know what was going on, but she was so frantic that the operator may not have understood her. Right near town limits, police set up spikes to stop the Kohnen’s, and as they drove over them, all four tires immediately went flat.
Police reportedly surrounded the vehicle and, at gunpoint, forced the couple to get out of the car and onto the ground. Once they had them on the ground, however, they quickly noticed that Rachel was in labor, so they rushed her over to the hospital. An hour after arriving, Rachel gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
So far, no charges have been filed against Rachel and Ben Kohnen, but Manson Police Chief Tom Ritts says that it’s the County Attorney’s decision whether or not to go ahead with criminal charges.
