A mailman in Fresno, Calif., was fired after he was caught throwing away Obamacare mailings.
The unidentified postal worker was reported by witnesses in an apartment complex who took pictures of the man tossing letters into a dumpster. Residents said the dumpster was filled with mail about the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
“He just kept glancing over his shoulder over and over again,” witness Jerry Dills told KMPH News. “It was like he knew what he was doing was wrong.”
Dills took the letters from the dumpster to the local post office and filed a formal complaint.
“This is very important information,” Dills said. “No telling where he’d stop it at — do you throw away one thing? Or is everything being thrown away on a daily basis?”
USPS later said the letter carrier threw the mail out because he was off schedule.
“He was running late and wanted to get back to the post office on time,” said USPS spokesman Gus Ruiz.
Ruiz told KMPH the employee was a temporary worker hired in August. When he admitted to throwing out the mail, he was immediately fired.
USPS is still investigating whether the carrier threw away mail on other days. He could face federal charges, KMPH reported.
