Arizona police say they arrested a man Monday for murdering his teen son with an ax because he believed the 13-year-old was possessed by a demon.
Gary Reagan Sherrill, 51, picked up his son David for visitation on Monday, but never brought him home. David’s mother called police and when officers made a welfare check at Sherrill’s home on Tuesday they found the teen stabbed to death inside.
"Gary confessed to the murder and stated he was scared of his son and believed his son was a demon and was going to eat him," said Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos. "Gary confessed to striking his son with an ax as he was in fear of him."
Sherrill did not explain why he believed his son was a demon, according to AZ Family. It is unclear whether he has a history of mental illness.
Neighbors says they’ve witness a lot of strange behavior from Sherrill.
Divina West said she saw him “out in his yard, yelling at the tree the day before.”
His windows were blacked out with tin foil.
“I never saw the child playing," a neighbor, who did not wish to be identified, told My Fox Pheonix. "Whenever he was let out of the house, he had a tight hold on him and to be perfectly honest with you in the beginning I kind of thought he might be kidnapped."
The woman said at some point she called child protective services, but without witnessing any abuse or neglect firsthand the agency would not follow up.
“I feel like the system failed this child,” she added.
Neighbors say Sherrill was screaming hysterically when he was arrested. He was yelling about war.
He is facing a first degree murder charge.
