A mother in Buffalo, N.Y. has been arrested for stabbing her 8-year-old son to death, apparently because she wanted to “save him” from hell.
Authorities were called to the family’s home around 2 a.m. on Wednesday. Eight-year-old Jacob Noe was taken to the hospital, but soon died from stab wounds.
His 29-year-old mother, Jessica Murphy, was taken into custody for killing him.
Jacob was a well-behaved second-grader at Tapestry Charter School.
Neighbor Chris Brown described the chilling scene to WIVB: “Just heard some blood curdling screams from a female saying, ‘Help, help!’”
While they were arresting her, Murphy told officers, “Everyone has to die. He had to die. I am saving him from going to hell.”
Court documents further reveal that while they were asking her interview questions, Murphy yelled at police, “How can you ask me this after I just murdered my baby?”
Murphy was arrested on charges of second-degree murder. She is currently being held without bail.
Family members say that Murphy showed signs of mental illness. While she and her son appeared to be a normal family from the outside, she posted on her Facebook page six days before the incident that people need to stop worrying about her—and asked them to stop calling her “mom.”
“Does that mean she’s going to murder her son? Of course not. But that is a very loud siren, a very bright red flag,” said psychologist Dr. Amy Beth Taublieb.
Taublieb said that Murphy’s Facebook posts, such as “You have to become the most brilliant in order to become the most ignorant,” show signs of delusion and narcissism.
Murphy has apparently shown no emotion while in court or being taken into custody. Assigned a public defender, she has pleaded not guilty.
