A married British math teacher was given a suspended sentence after he pleaded guilty to six counts of sexual activity with a teen student.
Andrew Welsh was found hiding in a storage space beneath a 16-year-old girl’s bed by her mother last July.
Prosecutor Goeff Whelan told the Bolton Crown Court that the mother saw movement in the drawer beneath her daughter’s bed.
“She asked the girl: ‘What are you doing? Who is here?’" Whelan told the court. “The girl replied ‘Mr. Welsh.’”
“Her mother ordered the defendant to get out from under the bed and recognized him from the school," he said.
Welsh admitted to consensual sex with the minor on two occasions and also said he sent her explicit text messages.
He said that the girl had finished attended the school where he worked and he didn’t believe their relationship was illegal.
Welsh was given a 14-month suspended sentence and 200 hours of community service. He will have to register as a sex offender for 10 years, the Metro reported.
His wife has stood by him throughout the trial.
