A Princeton, Minnesota, children’s entertainer, known locally as “Friendly” the clown and “Bob the Balloon Twister,” is behind bars, accused of sexually assaulting a 20-year-old woman suffering from a traumatic brain injury.
“Friendly” is actually 57-year-old Robert Jensen. Jensen is scheduled to appear in court next week, The Star Tribune reports. He faces three counts of third-degree criminal sexual assault and three counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Jensen was first charged on May 5 after his alleged victim reported him to a case worker with Mille Lacs County Community and Veteran Services earlier this year, The Princeton Union-Eagle reported. The case worker then reported the victim’s allegations to the Princeton Police Department.
The woman was living with Jensen and his wife, Peggy Ann Jensen, while she was coping with her brain injury, according to court documents obtained by the Star Tribune.
Mille Lacs County Attorney Joe Walsh declined to comment on the specifics of the woman’s injury or how she came to be living in the Jensens’ home.
The complaint against Jensen describes the alleged victim as a “vulnerable adult with mental health difficulties.”
Upon making the allegations to the case worker, the woman was reportedly taken to an area hospital for a sexual assault exam on Feb. 1.
There, court documents indicate, the woman told a nurse the abuse began the night of January 29 when Jensen entered her room and gave her a hug. She said Jensen then returned to her room, naked, around 5 a.m. on Jan. 30 and inappropriately touched her. She then said Jensen came back to her room around 9 a.m. and raped her.
According to the documents, the alleged victim told officers that Jensen had said “he was praying for a little girl like her to come around and mess around.”
Jensen reportedly declined to give a statement to police.
A court-ordered DNA test confirmed that semen found on the alleged victim was Jensen’s, according to the Star Tribune.
Jensen has reportedly been a children’s entertainer for 20 years.
An online ad, cited by the Daily Mail, billed “Friendly” the clown as a “family friendly clown.”
“He goes out of his way not to be scary. No adult themes,” the ad read.
“‘Having fun daily!’ is not just a fancy slogan with Friendly the clown,” read another ad before it was taken down, according to the Star Tribune. “As a professional clown, that is exactly what he intends to do at your event!”
Jensen remains in custody in the Mille Lacs County jail. He is being held on $100,000 bail.
