An 11-year-old Texas boy saved a little girl from being kidnapped and raped by an abductor.
TJ Smith says he saw Raeshawn Perez, 26, the reported kidnapper, attempting to snatch a 7-year-old girl while she was playing outside in Wichita Falls, on Dec. 10.
"She was riding her scooter and he picked her up and started walking, and I chased after him," TJ said, KPLR reports. "I thought it was her cousin or somebody."
The boy quickly realized the girl was in danger and ran to inform his mother Angela Smith, according to Times Record News.
"It overwhelmed me," Smith said. "He came in and told me about it, but you know they play outside all the time. I didn't know it was actually what it was until it was all recognized. I was very proud of him."
TJ also alerted neighbor James Ware about the situation.
The boy was able to direct Ware and another man to an abandoned house where was Perez attempting to put the 7-year-old through the window. They wrestled him to the ground and held him until authorities arrived at the scene.
Perez admitted to the police that he was planning on having sex with the little girl, according to authorities.
"The man over there that gave TJ the credit for it..." Smith said. "...He could have taken all the credit, but he said, 'No, this is the real hero.' It made me really proud."
Wichita Falls Mayor Stephen Santellana, said: "When the story broke, one of the first things I did was sent a text out saying to please find these individuals for me, if not privately, publicly. I just want to thank them on behalf of the city of Wichita Falls. I think the city of Wichita Falls is behind them 100 percent in their efforts."
Police Chief Manuel Borrego lauded TJ and the other Good Samaritans for their quick response.
Santellena and Borrego presented TJ with a certificate of appreciation in person, reports KPLR.
"One of our goals is to have our citizens assist us in preventing crime, looking out for each other and being good neighbors," Borrego says. "We certainly don't want them to put themselves at risk, but in this situation, I think the bravery of this young little boy and the bravery of the two other individuals was unique and necessary and I don't think they thought twice about it."
