The companion of a woman being sexually assaulted by a man in a New Orleans neighborhood managed to get the attacker’s gun out of his grasp, ultimately shooting and killing him.
New Orleans police reported that a man’s dead body had been found on the grounds of a school in the Bywater neighborhood around 10 p.m. on Thursday.
The next day the investigation revealed that the man had been killed by his own gun. The attacker had approached a couple walking in the area and led them at gunpoint to a building under renovation, where he began assaulting the woman.
The woman’s male companion was able to wrest the gun from the attacker’s grasp. A local resident reported hearing two shots, but police have not revealed how many times the attacker was shot.
"The man produced a gun and demanded that they walk to a building that was being renovated. Once they entered the yard, the man sexually assaulted the woman at which time the adult male disarmed the man and fatally shot him," NOPD Officer Garry Flot said in a news release.
Investigators interviewed the couple and made no arrests, but the case will be reviewed by the District Attorney’s office. The NOPD are still determining the origin of the gun.
The shooting occurred on the river side of St. Claude Avenue, which locals know to be a peaceful area.
"This is crazy ... we consider this the quiet side," said resident Diane Green.
