The Salinas, California, couple, accused of starving their three children and chaining one to the wall so she could not get food, will stand trial for multiple child abuse-related charges.
The charges raised against Eraca Dawn Craig, 33, and Christian Jessica DeAnda, 44, are eight counts of child abuse, one charge of child endangerment, a false imprisonment charge, and torture, reports Monterey County Herald.
The aforementioned charges are in connection with the alleged acts performed against their adopted 8-year-old daughter.
The couple also faces two misdemeanor counts of child endangerment concerning their two sons. Their 5-year-old son was adopted, while the youngest, aged 3, is the biological child of one of the women.
The alleged child abuse was discovered when a welfare worker went to visit the couple’s home on March 14, 2014, reports The Daily Mail. The 8-year-old girl was reportedly found covered in bruises by the worker, and it was later revealed that she was chained to the wall “all day, every day.”
“It seems that the little girl was the major target of this abuse," said Sheriff Scott Miller following the arrests. Miller added that the girl looked “like a concentration camp victim.”
All three children showed signs of physical and mental abuse.
Craig and DeAnda will be formally arraigned in court on Jan. 21 before standing trial.
