Katlyn Marin was arrested on Friday for beating her 3-year-old daughter Brielle Gage to death in November. The 25-year-old has faced charges of child abuse before, but was charged with second-degree murder for the death of her daughter. New Hampshire Attorney General Joseph Foster said that she, “recklessly caused the death of her daughter under circumstances manifesting an extreme indifference to the value of human life.”
Marin and her live-in boyfriend Michael Rivera were arrested in May for beating Marin’s eight and six-year-old boys. The boys said that the couple beat them with belts and made them kneel for over an hour, resulting in bruised knees. Five children were living with Marin and Rivera at the time of the first arrest and four of them were reported to have bruising across their bodies.
Marin claimed that the bruises were from the children fighting each other and that Brielle Gage was born with some bruising on her face. However, one boy said that the children were only allowed to eat once a day and were beaten if they were caught eating stolen food.
The children were taken into protective custody in April while Marin and Rivera were charged with second-degree assault and simple assault. Investigators report that there is no official record of when the children were let out of foster care and back into the care of the couple. Brielle Gage’s grandmother claims that the child was returned to her mother while the abuse charges were still pending. Only months later Brielle Gage was dead.
Brielle Gage died from trauma suffered during beatings on November 24 and 25. She was pronounced dead at the hospital and her death was immediately ruled a homicide. Marin was due to appear in court for the first assault case on December 15, but instead will sit in jail pending a hearing for the homicide on January 13.
