A homeless woman was arrested Wednesday at a California Walmart after allegedly attacking a 4-year-old girl and her father with a crowbar.
Maria Garate, 18, entered a San Jose Walmart carrying a crowbar just before 11 a.m. and approached the man and his daughter, who was sitting in a shopping cart.
Garate allegedly struck the girl on the head with the crowbar and a second time on the shoulder.
"She entered the store with the weapon, which makes us believe she was going to attack somebody no matter what," San Jose Police Lt. Jason Dwyer told NBC Bay Area.
"I just hear 'pop' and then I looked at my daughter. I see my daughter cry," the father said. "Then I throw my daughter far away."
She allegedly swung at the girl a third time, but her father was able to stop her. He was struck in the arm trying to protect her.
Garate was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
The family did not know Garate and the attack appears to be random.
The girl was treated and released from a local hospital.
