Florida woman Cateria Thomas was arrested after police discovered her breastfeeding while drunk driving with three toddlers in the back seat.
Volusia County officers said they originally pulled 33-year-old Thomas over for an altered tag on Tuesday, but found something far more disturbing when she stopped. Thomas was sitting in the driver’s seat breastfeeding a toddler. There were also three children under the age of 5 in the back seat.
Additionally, officers noticed a full gas can in the passenger seat.
Thomas reportedly had red, watery and glassy eyes. She was swaying and unsteady during a sobriety test. Thomas refused to take a breathalyzer test, but told officers she had eaten four hamburgers with whiskey on them.
The four children found in Thomas’ car are currently in the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families. The department is conducting background checks on Thomas’ relatives in order to find an appropriate place for the kids.
“We are very concerned about this incident,” the department noted in a statement. “This is very alarming that you would have someone trying to breastfeed their child while driving and especially while driving drunk. Seldom do we see this type of incident taking place.”
Thomas was arrested and jailed in Volusia County jail on Tuesday. She was charged with a child act that could result in physical or mental injury, DUI, operating with a suspended license, and unlawful alteration of a tag.
Thomas was arrested four times in 2003 and charged with child abuse, battery, burglary and third-degree grand theft, according to police reports.
