Five Delaware County, PA, residents are facing a string of charges for physically and sexually abusing five children inside a home in Darby, police say.
22-year-old Danielle Hammond and 31-year-old Shakia Jackson, the mothers of the five children, are being charged along with William Wade, 23; Daryl Carter, 24 and Mark Isom, 22 for corruption of minors, endangering the welfare of children, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, and assault. The children range in age from 1 to 10 years old.
Authorities say that the children had been subjected to sex acts being performed in front of them, were shot in the head with BB guns, and were “punched and slapped” and “thrown over a banister”, according to ABC 6 Action News. Wade and Carter also allegedly forced a 2-year-old child’s penis into Hammond’s mouth. According to reports, Hammond was released from jail on Friday.
Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan said that the children, who are currently in the custody of an aunt, are physically well but have been emotionally scarred by the abuse. “It’s almost unbelievable,” Whelan said. “You can’t even imagine the horror that these children had to live under.”
Whelan and the District Attorney’s Criminal Investigation Division reportedly began investigating the suspects in June.
Court documents show that Jackson, who is the mother of four of the victims, reportedly admitted to shooting her children in the head with a BB gun. Jackson said that she and the four other suspects were “only playing” and that the children “wanted to be shot.” One child, according to ABC 6, told authorities that the shooting “really hurt.”
While Jackson attempted to downplay the alleged crimes, Whelan said that the abuse was worse than anyone could imagine. “If I told somebody this, they probably wouldn’t believe that this could happen anywhere in this country.”
