A father from Illinois has been arrested after he allegedly kidnapped his 3-year-old daughter and left her in a trash can.
“Our investigation initially shows that the father left the child in a garbage can and drove away from the forest preserve,” said Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) spokesperson Andrew Flach.
Faiz Ikramulla, 35, is being held on an arrest warrant for aggravated kidnapping at the Van Buren County Jail in Southwest Michigan, reports the Chicago Sun Times. He will be extradited to Illinois.
A Cook County Sheriff’s Office news release said the father left his daughter in the Prospect Heights forest preserve “where he believed she would not immediately be found.”
The child was found wandering alone in tears along a road on Tuesday evening.
She was able to provide her name, Aliya, to police and told them she was left in the forest preserve, reports The Daily Mail.
A media alert was issued Tuesday evening, which led police to identify the child and her family.
Her mother was in the process of filing a Missing Persons Report when the alert went out.
“About the time that the news alert went out Tuesday evening, the mother of the child was in the process of filing a missing persons report for the girl and the husband,” said Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Cara Smith.
The mother is not under investigation, and is cooperating with DCFS investigators.
