A well-known jewel thief whose life has been the subject of a documentary that might be turned into a feature film has added more to her story after being arrested on Tuesday.
Doris Payne, who is now 83, was arrested on suspicion of felony larceny after allegedly trying to steal a $22,000 ring in Palm Desert, Calif., according to Mail Online.
Payne has been jailed in several states through her five-decade career as a jewel thief, and she’s the subject of a documentary titled “The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne.” She reportedly claims to have shoplifted jewelry from New York to Monte Carlo.
The Desert Sun reports that Payne is accused of lifting the ring from El Paseo Jewelers. The store’s manager Raju Mehta said Payne identified herself as “Audrey” and told him she wanted to make a purchase because her other jewelry had been stolen and said she had an insurance check for $40,000. Payne had him show her multiple pieces of jewelry and, he says, she took the ring while he wasn’t watching.
“It makes you angry, it makes you feel violated and that’s what happened to me,” Mehta said. “She stole right in front of my eyes.”
Payne, who was released from jail this year after serving two and a half years of a five-and-a-half-year sentence for stealing an $8,900 ring from a department store in San Diego, is being held on $45,000 bond. She is due back in court next week after waiving her right to an arraignment Thursday.
She reportedly claimed in the past that the first time she stole a diamond she was in her 20s and had lost count of how much jewelry she had taken.
