A horrifying sequence of events resulted in the death of one child as well as severe injuries to Melissa Randolph, 33, and her son. Her estranged husband and the father of the two children, Jeremy Gehl, 37, then apparently killed himself.
Police say Gehl stabbed his wife with a knife after a confrontation that occurred on Feb. 10 in Paoli, Indiana. His 6-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter, Addison, came downstairs after hearing the commotion. According to Daily Mail, Gehl then shot them both, killing his daughter and severely injuring his son. He then shot himself.
According to news station WLKY, Randolph ran outside with the third unharmed child in her arms when police arrived on the scene.
“She had run out of the residence and was bleeding from her wounds,” said Trooper Phillip Hensley. What police found inside the home, they said, was horrific.
“When one turns on his own children obviously there's going to be questions and concerns within the community and we would ask this family and the children specifically (be) in their thoughts and prayers,” said Hensley.
Addison was pronounced dead after being airlifted to hospital and her mother and brother are both in critical condition. Gehl was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The kids, they are just the sweetest things, they didn’t deserve this at all,” said a neighbor, who did not want to be identified.
"He was such a good dad, they were active and stuff," said a distant relative, who did not want to be identified.
Police say that Gehl and Randolph have been separated but there was no active protective order in place. Indiana State Police, Paoli Police and local sheriffs are in the process of investigating the situation and are working on contacting relatives for more information.
