| by Courtney Nunes

Three suspected gang members are facing charges after randomly assaulting a couple in Eugene, Ore.

According to local news station KVAL, three drunken gang members had been breaking into cars in the River Road area before heading east onto Stephens Drive. It was here where the trio encountered and assaulted the couple, a 24-year-old-man and a 32-year-old woman returning home from an evening walk.

Two of the men, Travis Gregory Brumwell, 20, and Jeffery Leon Guinn, 19, punched the female victim and knocked her to the ground.

According to police, the third gang member, 20-year-old Sharif Mohamed Gharaib, fled the scene.

The male victim then pulled out a knife and repeatedly stabbed Brumwell, who immediately took off running with Guinn.

The two gang members attempted to break into a home, but the owner confronted them with a shotgun, according to Eugene newspaper The Register-Guard.

Police received a call around 10:48 p.m., and they met up with Brumwell and Guinn about two blocks from the attack. Brumwell and the male victim were taken to different hospitals and treated for their injuries which were not life-threatening.

The third suspect, Sharif Gharaib, turned himself into police on Tuesday evening.

According to police, all three suspects are members of the West Side Piru criminal street gang.

Local residents told KEZI News that the neighborhood is usually very safe, and they were surprised to hear of the attack.

“I don’t know stuff like this could happen anywhere,” said River Road local Kelsea McNutt. “It’s just one of those things that it happened near where I live.”

KVAL reports the charges for each gang member, which are listed below.

- Travis Gregory Brumwell, 20: Two counts of Assault in the Third Degree, three counts of Unauthorized Entry into a Motor Vehicle, three counts of Theft in the Third Degree; and a Minor in Possession
