When police in Polk County, Wisconsin, responded to a 911 call about a truck weaving in and out of traffic, they likely didn’t expect to find a 9-year-old girl behind the wheel.
The girl’s mother, Amanda Eggert, her boyfriend, Jason Roth, and an 11-month-old baby were also in the vehicle, but police said the adults were drunk, KMSP reported. Eggert allegedly forced the 9-year-old to drive since she was too intoxicated to be behind the wheel.
“As the 9-year-old exited the truck, it was still running and in drive when Mr. Roth was sitting in the truck by himself,” Deputy Jeff Hahn, who was at the scene, testified during a preliminary hearing, according to KMSP. “He turned the ignition off and the truck began rolling backwards down the hill towards the river. I jumped into the truck to hit the brakes and put the truck in park.”
Police said Roth’s initial breath test registered a .25 blood alcohol content -- more than three times the legal limit.
No one was hurt during the child’s drive. On Feb. 5, about a week after the incident, Eggert and Roth pleaded not guilty to felony charges including child neglect and second-degree reckless endangerment of safety. The children have been placed with other relatives.
