During the early morning hours of Aug. 18, a deputy from the sheriff’s department of Sacramento, California, responded to a call from a man who claimed he kept hearing voices taunting him near his home in Rancho Cordova.
The deputy determined the man was intoxicated, but able to care for himself, according to a release from the Rancho Cordova Police Department.
As the deputy was leaving the apartment, he crossed through what was described as “a dimly lit, self-enclosed stairwell,” where he saw a shadowy figure which appeared to be holding a weapon.
The deputy shot at the figure, which turned out to be a Rancho Cordova police officer who was there to offer assistance, The Sacramento Bee reported.
Fortunately, the bullet missed and no one was harmed. The deputy, a 10-year veteran of the sheriff’s department, has been removed from his duties pending an investigation.
