An Oakland, California, mother was shot and killed on Monday while trying to protect her son and daughter from gunfire.
KTLA reports Chyemil Pierce, 30, had reportedly just picked up her children from daycare around 4:45 p.m. when a fight broke out in her neighborhood. Pierce, a human resource specialist at Kaiser Permanente, screamed for her children to run and take cover as gunfire broke out just outside of her home, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The children hid and were not harmed, but when police arrived they found Pierce outside of the house suffering from a gunshot wound. She died soon after.
Oakland police officer Frank Bonifaco said police are investigating the incident, and have revealed little about what happened, according to the Los Angeles Times. Bonifaco said officers found a teen injured by gunfire near the area that the fight took place, and a man with a gunshot wound was also reported at a nearby hospital on Monday evening.
No arrests have been made in connection to the shootings.
