‘Active Shooter’ At Washington Navy Yard, At Least Three People In Critical Condition

| by Sarah Fruchtnicht

The U.S. Navy reported Monday morning that there is an “active shooter” at the Washington Navy Yard inside the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building.

The Navy reported three shots fired around 8:20 a.m.

At 9:20 a.m. a police spokesman told the Washington Post that a lone gunman barricaded himself inside a room after he allegedly shot three people on the grounds in Southeast Washington. One D.C. police officer was also shot near the room.

At least three people, possibly four, have been injured. Police said all are in critical condition.

A shelter at the scene has been set up for emergency personnel.

About 3,000 people work in the headquarters. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) is the largest of the Navy's five system commands.

According to the Washington Post, police closed the 11th Street Bridge, M Street SE, and 4th Street SE. The Metro Transit entrance on New Jersey Avenue at the Navy Yard Station was closed by Metro Transit Police.
