3-Year-Old Autumn Elgersma Dies From Head Injuries; Daycare Provider Rochelle Sapp Reportedly Admits To Throwing Girl To The Floor

| by

An Iowa toddler who was injured in the home of her daycare provider has died from head injuries and authorities say the daycare provider has admitted to throwing the child to the floor.

Autumn Elgersma’s mother took her to a local hospital after she received a call from Rochelle Sapp that Elgersma had fallen down a flight of stairs, according to KTIV.

Elgersma was diagnosed with a head injury and was airlifted to a Sioux Falls, S.D., hospital where doctors found the 3-year-old had suffered a fractured skull and brain trauma. She died two days later from the injuries.

Sapp was interviewed by authorities after Elgersma was admitted to the hospital and she said that the girl fell down the stairs at her daycare facility

The Sioux City Journal reports that after Elgersma was admitted to the hospital, authorities interviewed Sapp, who said the child fell down the stairs at her daycare facility. Investigators later concluded that the girl's injuries were not consistent with that type of fall and police said Sapp then admitted to throwing the child to the floor.

The 33-year-old Sapp reportedly threw Elgersma to the floor because the girl wouldn’t take off her coat.

Sapp was initially charged with felony willful injury and child endangerment resulting in serious injury. A police chief said those charges will be amended because of the child's death.
