A 17-year-old New Jersey boy died after he was punched in the head by a 16-year-old outside his Hillsborough home on Saturday.
Jared Colon was airlifted to a hospital but died two days later from a severe brain bleed.
The teen who punched Jared in his yard was charged as a juvenile with reckless manslaughter.
Jared’s mother, Beth Colon, was at home at the time of the attack. She remembers her son saying “I'm not going to hit you” during an argument with the other teen.
She described her son as a considerate, giving teen.
“He really was about helping others, great old soul he was,” she said.
The bleeding on Jared’s brain was in an area where doctors could not operate. He died on Tuesday and his mother decided to donate his organs.
Colon, a former EMT, says she has already received news from the NJ Sharing Network donor organization that her son’s organs have saved a life.
“I hope these kids learn that they need to resolve their problems peacefully,” she said. “This violence is ridiculous and it's got to stop. I really hope they are able to learn that lesson from this.”
His mother has set up a fund in Jared’s name to help children who have anger management problems.
