A Russian boy was stabbed 20 times while he was on vacation on the island of Crete. Authorities allege that 12-year-old Nikita Onishchenko was stabbed by a Dutchman working as an entertainer at the boy’s hotel. Onishchenko was airlifted to a children's hospital in Athens and he is in a “comatose state.”
Onishchenko vanished from the Mitsis Laguna Resort and Spa. His mother, Ekaterina, raised the alarm about her son’s disappearance. After a lengthy search for the boy, he was found lying behind disused piping and building materials at the edge of a field near the hotel.
Police have the unnamed hotel employee in custody. They say that the Dutchman confessed to the stabbing and to stealing an iPad, laptop and mobile phone from the boy. Authorities have found the knife believed to have been used in the attack and recovered the laptop and mobile phone. The weapon had been stashed in a fire hose, The Daily Mail reported.
“He is still in critical condition,” said Panos Ephstathiou, head of the medical center where the child was first treated before being airlifted to Athens. “The patient can later face serious problems with the lower limbs. Unfortunately, in such cases, the injuries often lead to paralysis of the legs.”
Greece tried to downplay the incident in the hopes of maintaining its status as a safe tourist destination. “I am sincerely sorry for what happened. Greece is a safe country,' said Health Minister Andreas Lykourentzos.”
