Convicted murderer Joran van der Sloot will be married in a maximum security prison in Peru next week. Van der Sloot is convicted of killing Stephanie Flores in a Lima, Peru hotel room in 2010 and is also the main suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Hollaway.
So who is van der Sloot’s lucky bride? She is identified as 24-year-old Leidy Figueroa from Lima. Figueroa told CBS she met van der Sloot in 2010 when she went to his prison with her cousin to visit another inmate. Typical Hollywood romance story.
When asked why she was interested in marrying a man who will spend the vast majority of his life in prison, Figueroa said van der Sloot is “a new person.” He is apparently enjoying arts and craft classes in prison in addition to his international business studies.
Figueroa is pregnant with van der Sloot’s child, by the way. It’s not known if she became pregnant during a visit or through artificial insemination.
Van der Sloot's lawyer bought a wedding ring for Figueroa featuring a small stone. She is currently trying to get a permit to record the wedding ceremony inside the prison.
Though the couple will be married at this time next week, it’s pretty clear that they will never live together as a couple. Van der Sloot has only served four years of his 28-year prison sentence in Lima. Upon his release 24 years from now, he will immediately be extradited to the United States to be investigated for the disappearance of Hollaway. Van der Sloot was never charged for Hollaway’s disappearance, but that could easily change once the investigation opens up again.
But anyways, enough of the downer talk. Enjoy the wedding you two!
