Bush Brothers & Company has issued a voluntary recall on three varieties of baked beans after discovering "potentially defective side seams on the cans."
The recall was announced on the company's website July 22 and affects certain cans of the following products: Brown Sugar Hickory Baked Beans, Country Style Baked Beans and Original Baked Beans.
"This recall was initiated after our internal quality assurance checks identified the issue," the company wrote. "Subsequent investigations indicated a temporary quality issue from one of our can suppliers. The problem was corrected and no other product is affected."
Below are the specific lot numbers and expiration dates associated with the recalled cans:
- 28-ounce Bush’s Best Country Style Baked Beans with a UPC of 039400019749; lot codes 6077S RR, 6077P RR, 6087S RR, 6087P RR; and a best-by date of June 2019
- 28-ounce Bush’s Best Brown Sugar Hickory Baked Beans with a UPC of 039400019770; lot codes 6097S GF and 6097P GF; and a best-by date of June 2019
- 28-ounce Bush’s Best Original Baked Beans with a UPC of 039400016144; lot codes 6057S LC and 6057P LC; and a best-by date of June 2019
According to Bush Brothers & Company, the recalled products have thus far not resulted in any injuries.
"It's important to note that, to date, no illnesses or other adverse consequences have been reported in connection with this voluntary recall; however, we urge you to dispose of these affected products immediately even if the beans do not look or smell spoiled," the statement reads. "We are working with our retailers to ensure timely removal of affected product from their warehouses and shelves."
The company added: "As a fourth generation family owned business, we are guided by our values of integrity, caring, responsibility, and trust and we apologize for any inconvenience or concern this situation may cause."

Bush Brothers & Company has been family owned since it was founded in 1908. On July 17, it was reported that Drew Everett, the great-grandson of company founder A.J. Bush, was elected chairman of the board.
Everett has been with the company for 22 years, serving a variety of functions including vice president and director of shareholder relations & human resources, according to The Newport Plain Talk. He is the fifth family member to serve as company chairman.
