Collette Moreno, 26, was killed in a car crash on Friday on the way to her bachelorette party.
According to Missouri news station KCTV-5, Moreno’s friend Ashley Theobald was driving when the accident occurred. Theobald, who survived the accident, told police she crashed while trying to pass a semi-truck that was pouring out fumes.
"She had bad asthma and there was a truck in front of us that was releasing a lot of exhaust," Theobald said. "She started coughing."
When Theobald used the left side of the road to pass the truck, she suddenly found herself approaching another car in oncoming traffic. Both vehicles swerved to avoid a collision, but the other vehicle struck the passenger side of Theobald’s car. Her vehicle then drove off the road and crashed, killing Moreno.
“We both thought it was clear and there was a hill that neither one of us saw," Theobald told KCTV-5 through tears. "I tried to go around and there was a truck coming and I swerved and he swerved with me.”
Moreno’s mother, Kelly Arie, says the death feels like a nightmare.
“It felt like a messed-up dream and I needed to wake up from it,” Arie said. “And I just couldn’t believe it. I still can’t.”
Moreno was set to marry Jesse Arcobasso, 28. She is survived by her five year old son. Arcobasso says the child is struggling to understand what happened.
"He doesn't quite understand everything just yet," Arcobasso said. "I know it's going to take time."
Theobald is facing multiple traffic charges for the crash, but will not be charged with any criminal offenses. Police say Moreno was wearing her seatbelt during the accident.
