Robert Lawrence was fatally shot by a police officer outside an animal shelter in Dothan, Alabama, on Tuesday.
According to Dothan Police Sgt. Maurice Eggleston, Lawrence was trying to return a stray animal.
However, at some point during the process, Lawrence was told he could not do so without showing his ID. He subsequently got into an argument with shelter employees who called the police.
"After repeatedly being told to calm down, Lawrence was advised he was being placed under arrest," Sgt. Eggleston told AL.com. "A physical altercation ensued, to which Lawrence was shot in the abdomen."
Neither the preliminary reports nor the police department’s statement have indicated that Lawrence was armed.
The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.
DothanEagle.com reports that Lawrence had previously been jailed for making threats to government employees.
Two women, Delila Mahoney and Crystal Lawrence, filed restraining orders against him in 2014. Both women had children with Lawrence.
