A Portland woman pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges that she drowned her brother’s dog for defecating on her floor.
Laura D. Carney-Herrara, 44, was charged with two counts of first-degree aggravated animal abuse, two counts of first-degree animal abuse, second-degree animal abuse and first-degree animal neglect.
Oregon Humane Society investigators, working from an anonymous tip, say the 2-year-old dog named Fred was killed some time between January and March, The Oregonian reports.
Humane Society special agent Allen Zaugg says Carney-Herrara told him her brother left the dog at her Portland home. Fred refused to eat and kept defecating on her floor, according to an affidavit filed in Multnomah County Court by prosecutor Nicole Jergovic. She told her brother to come get the dog, but he never came to pick him up.
Carney-Herrara woke up from a nap one day to find the dog had defecated on the floor again.
"She got upset and kicked him in the butt, and he yelped and ran crooked into the bathroom and kept yelping,'' the affidavit states.
When she saw the dog was severely injured, she allegedly decided to kill him so no one would learn what she had done.
"She said that when she saw that he was bleeding and yelping and couldn't stand on his back legs and kept falling over she was afraid that people would think she was a bad person for hurting Fred so she put him in a plastic tub,” the affidavit says.
She put Fred in the tub, filled it with water and drowned him, according to the affidavit.
A neighbor told investigators she remembers seeing Carney-Herrara around Christmastime with a broken toe and Carney-Herrara allegedly claimed that she broke it when “she kicked the dog.”
Carney-Herrara's son told a Multnomah County animal services officer that his mother asked him to bury Fred some time in January.
Carney-Herrara is being held at Multnomah County Detention Center.
