A photo of numerous stray dogs sleeping in a Greek cafe is going viral.
The photo shows four dogs sleeping on the couches of Hot Spot cafe in Mytilene, Lesbos, Inspire More reported. The stray dogs were taken in by the Cafe’s owner after the shop closed at night.
The cafe-by-day pet motel-by-night has been taking homeless dogs in since July. Management plans to continue their service to the pups.
“In the city there are many dogs,” Antonis, a waiter at the cafe, said. “When the bar closes each night, the dogs come and sleep here. We don’t have a problem. From July, every night there is a dog on the couch.”
In Greece, stray dogs are microchipped, vaccinated, collared, neutered and cared for by the community.
“In most European countries, they solve this problem [of stray dogs] with euthanasia,” the head of Athens’ Stray Animal Service explained. “But Greek culture is against that. Our law is about rehabilitating the dogs. People here take care of them and love them. They are like everyone’s dog.”
While some Facebook users said the idea was unsanitary, most praised the cafe for its actions.
"This is wonderful," one user wrote. "And I would give them my business for this reason. You can tell a lot about people by the way they treat animals. These are good people. And for those of you complaining, I am sure the staff cleans before opening for business. They would be as good to their customers as they are to the dogs."
