Donkey-Sex Suspect Carlos Romero Describes Sexual Attraction to Horses

| by Denise A Justin

Carlos Romero, the Florida farm hand arrested for having sex with his miniature donkey, Doodles, was released from Marion County Jail on Wednesday, September 19, after posting $2,000 bond, according to Ocala.com.

Romero was held in protective custody by police for almost 24 hours for his safety, jail officials stated.

After his arrest, Romero had vowed to regain possession of his 21-month-old donkey. When he was arrested, Romero was reportedly adamant about getting Doodles back, "I want my donkey back. There's got to be due process here. I paid $500 for her."

However, an employee at the farm where Romero kept Doodles told reporter Austin Miller that Romero had returned to the property and was keeping to himself.

Romero’s arrest record shows the code violation as a misdemeanor. Jail officials said Romero is charged with animal cruelty. County spokeswoman Elaine McClain said Doodle appears to be in good health, and there are "no outward signs of any physical abuse."

Romero, 31, said he believes authorities placed him in protective custody in a ploy to keep him away from Doodles.

Romero was arrested after Gerald Joseph James, the proprietor of the farm where he rented a space to keep Doodles, told the Sheriff's Office that he saw Romero having sex with Doodles.

According to a police report obtained by thesmokinggun.com, James said he was delivering a horse when he allegedly saw Romero shirtless and with his pants pulled down, appearing to have sex with a donkey in an equipment room. The sexual contact, he told police, was an accident.

Romero said he purchased Doodles from a man in Lake City and brought her to the farm in Marion County a couple of months ago.

Although reports of bestiality—having sex with animals—is not uncommon, few perpetrators have defined their physical attraction to horses as Romero did in an interview with Austin Miller of Ocala.com.

Romero admitted that he has had sex with horses many times since he was 18 and likes their "feminine shape, behavior and raw power."

According to the report, Romero said he has always felt an attraction toward animals, especially horses, because people have been known to ‘stab you in the back, give you diseases, lie to you" and are "promiscuous." Animals, he said, "are usually there for you" and "do not seek other pleasures." Their feelings are "100 percent honest.”

Romero told detectives he uses his fingers and saliva to clean the donkey’s clitoris and checks for wood shavings and debris.

Here’s his exact statement, according to the arrest record: “Defendant stated every 21 days the donkey goes into heat.  He stated he gets aroused seeing an animal in heat and watching animals mate. Defendant stated he stands behind the donkey, scratches her withers and masturbates.  Defendant stated he likes the way the fur feels on his testicles and stated his penis may have come in contact with the donkey’s vagina by accident and his semen may have splattered inside the donkey by accident. Defendant recalls masturbating with the donkey 5 or 6 times. Defendant stated Florida is a backwards state and people frown on zoophilia here.”

Romero denied doing anything sexual to the donkey "because she's blooming into maturity" but said he eventually would have.

Romero said that he planned to post bond and return to the farm and then reclaim Doodle, but Gerald James said Romero is not welcome on the property because he is concerned about the welfare of the horses, according to Ocala.com.

An official at the Marion County Animal Shelter said that since Romero was released had not contacted them. They advised that they plan to petition the court for legal custody of the donkey. If the court grants it, the county may put Doodles up for adoption.
