A miniature dachshund in Ohio who weighed 56 pounds has finally lost 75 percent of his body weight, thanks to a doggie diet and his dedicated owner.
Brooke Burton couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw Dennis waddle into the room for the first time. He originally belonged to a relative, who admitted to feeding the dog White Castle burgers, pizza and other human food. Burton, a nursing student, knew she had to take Dennis under her wing and convinced the relative to turn him over to her.
Dennis began eating dog food and going on lots of walks under Burton’s care. Finally, he reached an ideal weight of 12 pounds. Now, Dennis spends his time chasing squirrels in the backyard, playing fetch and bossing around the other rescue dogs he lives with.
“In the beginning, you could tell he was very depressed, that he really didn’t feel good at all. He didn’t have much of a personality,” Burton said. “After he lost weight, this bossy little demanding man popped out. He’s into everything, he wants to play with everybody.”
Since losing so much weight, Dennis has been taken to the hospital three times to treat his flabby skin and infections.
Surgeon Dr. Kathleen Ham noted that pets need affection and attention from us more than food. She added that Dennis should be a warning to pet owners who indulge their animals with treats.
