Teen Car Crash Survivor Opens Up About School Bullying

A Scottish teenager who had to undergo reconstructive surgery to her face after a horrific car crash was bullied in school over her looks following the accident. The young woman wrote about her ordeal in a Facebook post that went viral.

Chloe Thomson, now 19, was severely injured in October 2008 when the car she was traveling in spun off the road and crashed into a tree in Scotland, the Daily Mirror reported. The teen was 11 years old at the time.

The tree reportedly broke in half and crashed onto the roof of the car.

The other occupants of the vehicle, including Thomson's sister and cousin, managed to escape unharmed. However, Thomson suffered from the impact of the crash when a rear passenger window shattered near her face.

Thomson was airlifted to Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, Scotland, immediately after the accident and was later transferred to Yorkhill Children's Hospital in Glasgow.

She had to undergo emergency surgery to treat her many injuries, including a facial reconstruction and realigning her broken legs. During treatment, surgeons had to take off her entire face to fix her eye sockets, nose and jaw.

A fragment of the teen's nose also became lodged in her brain due to the accident. Doctors have not determined whether this will cause any permanent damage.

Although Thomson returned home in time for Christmas that year, she was still in constant pain and didn't dare look at her reflection in the mirror for a month.

"For months I didn't go anywhere," she said, according to the Daily Mirror. "I didn't keep in touch with my friends, I didn't want to."

"I was constantly reliving the accident all the time," she added. "It was the worst experience of my life."

Thomson's ordeal worsened when she had to face bullies at school who taunted her about her looks. The bullying reportedly led the teen to black out what had happened to her for a long time and deny that she was ever in an accident when questioned about it.

The teen, who said that she has come to terms with the accident and is finally happy with the way she looks today, has recently posted about her experiences on Facebook.

"Everyone's got such a big opinion on what I look like or how everyone thinks I'm so fulla s---," she wrote in the Nov. 25, 2015 post, according to The Sun.

"The photo on the left is the way I looked when I was 12 [because] I was in a car accident and I had to look like this for a good few years getting called all sorts so I've heard it all!!" she wrote.

The post, which included pictures of her injuries following the crash, received thousands of likes and hundreds of supportive comments from Facebook users, according to the Daily Mirror.

Thomson is currently studying for her highers -- a certificate to leave school in Scotland -- and hopes to become a makeup artist.

"When people see my pictures now, they think I'm too confident," she wrote in the post, according to the Daily Mirror. "But now I think, 'Why shouldn't I be?'"
