Armed Police Chase 10-Year-Old Black Boy (Video)

| by Sheena Vasani

After mistaking Legend Preston for an armed robbery suspect, gun-wielding Newark police officers in New Jersey mistakenly chased after a 10-year-old African-American boy on Aug. 11.

“They tried to shoot me ... the cops,” a sobbing Legend told his mother in a Facebook video she uploaded on her page, reports the New York Daily News

His mother, Patisha Solomon, was enraged both by the incident and how police responded later.

“A 10-year-old child with guns drawn on him by the Newark police and the best they can tell me is go make a report if I have something to say about it,” the mother said in the video.

Police were searching for alleged thief Casey Joseph Robinson, 20, when they temporarily lost him.

Legend was playing basketball when police officers proceeded to confuse Legend for the adult man, chasing him into an alley, KTTV reports.

"They were ready to shoot!!!" wrote Soloman.

Acting as a human shield around the boy, local residents and friends attempted to protect Legend from the police.

“This is a child!” they reportedly screamed according to Soloman.

Officers responded saying he matched the perpetrator's physical description.

“They chased down my 10-year-old son with loaded shotguns ready to shoot because they said he matched the description of the over 6 foot tall man, dark skin with long locs...which my son is none of,” his mother wrote on her Facebook page, adding that the officers were aware this was a child and even taunted the neighbors protecting her son. “They had pictures of the perp whom was in eye sight running down the next block!!! Yet they broke off from chasing the perp to chasing my child.”

Soloman ended her Facebook post begging for police to be held more accountable and to reform reform, adding that some of her own family members are even cops and need to change as well.

"#NEWARKPOLICE #TOOMANYSILENT "GOOD COPS" some even family NOBODY checked on my child," she wrote. "#BLUERUNSDEEP #CITYOFNEWARK silence plays a big part!!! but what do you think my son feels about them now."

"Please spread the devastation they are grooming our children in," Solomon added. "they want to create hate and criminals out of our children!!! #STOPTRYINGTOKILLOURCHILDRENPOLICE."
