An wealthy Internet entrepreneur built a massive underground garage on his Lake Tahoe property that housed his 30 cars and several dozen motorcycles (video below).
Tom Gonzales, co-founder of e-commerce company Commerce One, built a 12,000-square-foot underground parking garage for his cars. He gets the vehicles in there using a 12-foot by 60-foot aircraft elevator that was purpose-built.
The elevator, when not moving Gonzales’ cars, is disguised using rocks, plants and trees that surround it. The mogul’s estate, called the Sierra Star, also includes a 10,000-square-foot home, a 2,100-square-foot house called the Carriage House, and two other, separate houses.
“In summertime it's heaven,” Gonzales told CNN Money. “In winter too, if you're a skier."
Gonzales built the massive estate as a gathering place for his family, but his son — Commerce One co-founder Tom — died of cancer more than a decade ago.
“I've enjoyed the property over the years, but now it's just me,” he said. Gonzales now spends his time in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He put the property on the market in 2012 for $50 million, but also put each portion of the compound for sale individually. The main house was priced at $14.9 million, the Lakeview house was listed at $9.3 million, the Carriage House was $8.9 million and the Parkview House was $6.3 million.
Commerce One filed for bankruptcy in 2004, and Gonzales transitioned into land development.
“He's the kind of guy who, if he gets tired of something, he sells it,” Gonzales’ real estate agent, Susan Rindley, told CNN Money.
In similar Lake Tahoe real estate news, Sacramento Kings co-owner and 24-Hour Fitness co-founder Mark Mastrov recently listed his Lake Tahoe property for $35 million, Celebrity Net Worth Reported. The 14,000-square-foot home, which sits on 13.6 acres, features a basketball court, golf course, swimming pool and two gyms.
