A video recently posted to YouTube shows how processed meat is made.
The video (below), recently posted to the YouTube channel “How It’s Made,” shows how manufacturers produce deli meats like sausages, olive loaf and bologna.
At the 3:27 mark, a worker fits a natural casing over a stuffing horn and fills with a mixture of beef, pork and seasoning. This is how bologna is made.
Check out how other deli foods are manufactured, and fair warning, do not eat while watching the video below:
While eating meat can be nutritious, several studies have found that processed meats may cause health problems.
In 2013, a 12-year European study of about half a million men and women linked eating processed meats regularly to premature death, The Globe and Mail reported.
A 2007 review of 7,000 studies revealed that high intakes of processed meats raises the risk of colorectal cancer.
So, what makes it so unhealthy? Well, processed meat is a source of saturated fat, which can increase blood cholesterol. It’s also really high in sodium.
However, study findings suggested eating 20 grams or less per day is safe. That’s about 2 strips of bacon or half a hot dog.
