Tinder is bringing groups of people together with its new social feature.
The dating app, well-known for connecting strangers by their close proximity for a hookup or potential romance, now gives users the option to expand their party of two with Tinder Social.
No, Tinder Social is not promoting orgies or group sex, rather it’s aiming to bring groups of people together for memorable nights out at a concert, bar, party or any other social activity.
“Often your best nights are when you’re hanging with friends, someone makes an unexpected connection with someone in another crew, and your two crews have an amazing time together,” the app’s blog said on July 21. “Maybe you spark a romantic connection. Maybe you make new friends. Either way, a good night out with your friends becomes something better.”
Tinder Social is only for impromptu nights out and does not give the option to plan something in advance.
“People can see who’s going out tonight, what they’re up to, and plan their night, easily and efficiently -- all on Tinder Social,” the blog states.
When a user accesses Tinder Social, they invite friends to join a group. Then, they can swipe and match with other groups nearby who have plans for the evening.
"The best nights are the nights when you're out and you socialize with other groups," Tinder CEO Sean Rad told CNNMoney. "The whole point of this is to make sure that happens by design."
As for the morning after, users will find their group and its matches have disappeared by noon, on purpose.
Rad said the company is working on an update to allow users to find specific people they had a connection with.
Tinder Social will be available in all English speaking countries, and it must be unlocked inside the Tinder app for users to access its features.
"We've done a really good job facilitating romantic one-on-one connections but we want to power your entire social life," Rad said.
At this time, Tinder Social is only available to groups, so people flying solo will not be able to use it.
