Adopted Dog Repays Family By Saving Their Baby's Life (Video)

| by Lauren Briggs

A Connecticut family is forever in debt to their pet dog after the smart, heroic pup saved the life of their baby in the middle of the night (video below).

Six years before the incredible moment, the Brousseau family headed to their local animal rescue and picked out a medium-sized mutt, named Duke, reports Shareably.  At the time, they felt a connection with the dog and knew that in giving him a good home, they were saving his life. Little did they know, he would go on to return the favor.

"He's the perfect dog, he was meant to be ours," mom Jenna Brousseau tells WFSB in a video clip that has gone viral with more than 5.5 million views. "He's a good boy."

After putting Duke and their 9-week-old daughter, Harper, to bed one night, the Brousseaus followed suit and went to sleep, just like any other normal evening. Hours later, in the middle of the night, Duke hopped onto the couple's bed and started shaking so uncontrollably that he woke the parents.

Nobody likes being suddenly jolted awake in the middle of their sleep, especially when they have a newborn baby that can hardly rest for more than a few hours at a time. So when it was the dog causing a stir this time, their first instinct might have been to be annoyed, but they quickly realized something was wrong.

"He is insanely obedient, so this was extremely bizarre," Jenna explains in the clip.

It was clear that Duke was badly rattled, so the family got up to see what was wrong. They went to check on Harper in her room and discovered, to their horror, she was not breathing steadily.

All thanks to Duke, they were able to call 911, and emergency medical responders arrived just in time to stabilize Harper and transport her to the hospital. She recovered completely.

Duke's story is a remarkable one, but it's not at all uncommon for dogs to be so attuned to the health and moods of their owners that they can sense when something is off, sometimes to the point of performing heroic, life-saving acts like alerting people to danger, notes Healthy Pets. That's why service and medical alert dogs are so invaluable.

"If Duke hadn't been so scared, we would have just gone to sleep," Jenna says in the video.

Duke definitely deserves to be spoiled after this.
