A mysterious photograph of a young girl in the woods has piqued the curiosity of residents of Cambridge, New York.
While the landowners who captured the image simply want to find the little girl's family, others have claimed the girl in the photo is a ghost, the Daily Mail reports. The image was captured by a camera the landowners had set up on their property.
When they asked around to find the girl's parents, no one recognized the girl, who appears to be in modern clothing.
"I've lived here all my life, and I've never heard of a ghost running around the woods," said Greenwich Police Chief George Bell. "The idea originally was just to identify who the child was."
People in the area have been debating whether the photo is simply a girl who was playing in the woods, or whether the explanation is more supernatural, WTEN reports.
"I think it's a ghost," said one resident. "Why do you say that? Because look at it. It's definitely a spirit."
"I don't know," said another. "It's kind of hard to believe what you see on social media nowadays."
"I think it's just a little girl playing in the woods," said another resident. "I don't think it's a ghost."
Tania Woodward, the president of the Greenwich Paranormal Research Team, said the team had experienced a large amount of paranormal activity near where the girl was photographed.
According to a local legend, a young girl around the age of the child in the photo died while playing on train tracks that once ran nearby.
After no one came forward to identify the young girl for a few weeks, the debate continued in the town. Police were still searching for the young girl's identity.
"I don't know, there is some creepy stuff in this town," said resident Andrew Banas.
"I would say there's no way that's a ghost but that's the kind of thing where I'd say, eh, I don't know," said another.
"There has to be an explanation. I just hope they come forward soon to clear it up," said another resident.
Bell said a man has come forward, saying he is the girl's grandfather, and possibly putting the mystery to rest, according to ABC News.
"I don’t want to give a name until we verify it, but it's a local businessman in southern Washington County who says, around the time frame that this picture was taken, that he and his granddaughter were walking a four-wheeler path," said Bell.
