The kindness shown by a Walmart cashier to an elderly man trying to pay with change has gone viral.

The cashier's patience and understanding were captured by Spring Bowlin, a Mississippi woman in Walmart during her lunch break. As Bowlin got in the checkout line to pay, she noticed the elderly man ahead of her.

"This gentleman's items were scanned and he was given the total," Bowlin wrote in a Nov. 9 Facebook post. "He looks apologetically back at me and starts taking handfuls of change out of his pockets."

The man tried to count the coins quickly, but made a mistake and got flustered, Bowlin wrote. His hands and voice started shaking as he apologized to Bowlin for taking so long. Then the cashier stepped in.

"This beautiful cashier takes his hands and dumps all the change on the counter and says: 'This is not a problem, honey. We will do this together,'" Bowlin wrote.

That's when Bowlin snapped a photo of the man and the cashier working together to count the coins. As they counted the coins, the man continued to apologize to Bowlin and the cashier.

"He continues to apologize to both of us as we reassure him it's ok," Bowlin writes. "They get his transaction handled and he shuffles away."

Now alone with the cashier, Bowlin thanks the woman for being so patient with the man.

"She shakes her head and replies: 'You shouldn't have to thank me, baby. What's wrong with our world is we've forgotten how to love one another.' I want to be more like her," Bowlin wrote.

Within five days, the post garnered more than 38,000 reactions and was shared more than 22,000 times.

Comments on Bowlin's post have been overwhelmingly positive, with many saying the cashier is an example more people should strive toward.

"So true and not the norm in my experience," wrote one commenter. "If you take too long in line customers behind you start to grumble. Patience is a virtue we need more of! Compassion and empathy too! This interaction between cashier and customer should be the norm, humanity, we need a lot more of!"

"This lady just showed everyone how we should be each and every day," wrote another. "We forget about the troubles we all have. The people that live day to day because of financial troubles. Amazing, inspiring, challenging story to be just like her."

Commenters also shared their thoughts on whether or not this story was "newsworthy."

"Definitely 'newsworthy,'" one commenter wrote on WHBQ's Facebook page. "Warms my heart to hear stories of compassion. Blessings to everyone involved."
