Supermodel Gigi Hadid is in hot water after a recent Instagram post in which she appears to mock Asians (video below).
The Daily Beast reports that Hadid’s sister, Bella, also a famous model, posted a video of Gigi on her birthday to the popular social media site. At dinner, Gigi is handed a small Buddha doll, which she holds next to her face as she slants her eyes in an apparent attempt to mimic the doll’s look.
Many on social media have decried the seemingly racist taunt that Gigi makes in the video.
One user wrote, “[T]his is y'all woke palestine queen? Gigi out here mocking Asian people. i would say she's [canceled] but she never started. rat.”
Gigi’s boyfriend, Zayn Malik, who is of Pakistani descent, came to her defense, writing, “[T]rust me… she likes Asians ;)”
Gigi herself is of Palestinian descent, and has come under fire in the past for adopting the cultures of other races. During her shoot for Vogue Italia, Gigi styled her hair in an afro for every shot, and displayed a darker-than-usual tan. The shoot received backlash online from some, who accused her of being a racist.
She also came under fire during the American Music Awards, when she attempted to impersonate Melania Trump, only to receive more backlash online that she was being racist and offensive. Gigi was forced to issue a public apology in which she insisted that there was "no bad intent."
This latest slip-up is sure to prompt further insinuations against the supermodel. See for yourself if Gigi’s actions are indeed racist or simply all in good fun.
