Artist Grandma's Sad Story Goes Viral

An 89-year-old woman who was saddened that no one attended her art show at a Connecticut library has become a viral sensation after her granddaughter shared her story online.

“Came home from an away game & my grandma went to her art showing and no one went she called herself foolish,” Magdalene Stift-Jourdan’s granddaughter, Lily Jourdan, tweeted with a broken heart emoji, the Daily Mail reports.

Magdalene, who was born in the Austro-Hungarian empire before moving to Canada and then the United States, has been painting for more than 60 years. This the artist's first show.

The Thompson Public Library announced on its Facebook page that Magdalene’s art work would be on display through the month of May, with a reception scheduled for the evening of May 5. It did not promote the event in any other way, or invite anyone to attend, which led to a small turnout.

The Facebook event page states that 50 people attended. The show includes 43 of Magdalene's paintings.

Magdalene's granddaughter Jenean told BuzzFeed News the only people who went to the opening were her uncle and parents, and two people from town. Jenean and Lily could not attend because one had to work and the other had a softball game.

“She felt like a fool,” Jenean said.

“She worked all week writing captions for her paintings,” Jenean said. “She got all dressed up and was anticipating it for months.”

Lily Snapchatted and tweeted the following photo of her grandmother at the event, which led to her receiving an outpouring of support, Daily Mail reports.

“Dressed so nice for her art showing at the library and no one went :(,” Lily captioned the image.

In less than 24 hours, it was retweeted more than 14,000 times, liked by more than 20,000 users, and received numerous replies.

Some responders are trying to find a way to attend Magdalene's art show before it closes May 25.

Magdalene is touched by the outpouring of support for her art.
