Kings Mountain, North Carolina, has added the national motto “In God We Trust” to its city hall. The phrase was emblazoned in 18-inch bronze lettering on the government building on Sept. 3.
Approved by the Kings Mountain council members in May, the motto was installed by organizations Return America and the U.S. Motto Action Committee. The cost of the sign, $2,400, was covered by private donations raised by the two groups.
“This motto is an acknowledgment that is consistent with the mindset of our founders of this country and perfectly legal for a government to display it,'' says about council member Keith Miller.
Kings Mountain embracing “In God We Trust” is hardly the first time the motto has been stamped on government buildings in North Carolina. Council chambers already bear the words across 37 North Carolina jurisdictions, according to Kings Mountain Herald.
Return America is a grassroots organization that devotes its efforts to "restoring our Judeo-Christian heritage" into North Carolina public spaces. It was established in 2006.
The U.S. Motto Action Committee was established during a lawsuit filed in 2003. The lawsuit had been filed against the commissioners of Davidson County County, North Carolina, for allowing “In God We Trust” to be affixed on government buildings. The committee was formed to help raise money for the county to contest the charges, which were eventually thrown out.
The group has since been effective in raising private donations to inscribe “In God We Trust” across cities in North Carolina.
“In times of war and peace, these words have been a profound source of strength and guidance to many generations of Americans,” says U.S. Motto Action Committee Chairman Rick Lanier. “As a grassroots patriotic movement, the U.S. Motto Action Committee stands on solid legal ground. Since Davidson County paved the way, not one legal challenge has been raised against any city or county that has voted ‘Yes.’ This effort is legal, and there is nothing to challenge.”
According to The Times-News, U.S. Motto Action Committee is dedicated to pushing back against efforts to secularize North Carolina by groups such as American Civil Liberties Union and Americans United for Separation of Church and State.
"In God We Trust" was adopted as the U.S. national motto in 1956.
