Former Arkansas Governor and ex-Fox News host Mike Huckabee claimed last month that a pencil is an assault weapon just like a AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.
Huckabee was speaking at the Destiny Worship Center, a church that he attends in South Walton, Florida, in January. His appearance was an effort to plug his new book “God, Guns, Grits, and Gravy,” noted RightWingWatch.org (video below).
Huckabee claimed that cities such as New York, Washington D.C. and Hollywood are in "bubbles" and think, "We're crazy."
As an example, Huckabee recalled an incident when he was filming his Fox News show in New York City.
"I’ll never forget sitting around with my own staff at Fox News, New Yorkers all, and something came up about guns and they were saying about how, ‘Nobody should ever own an AR-15, there’s just no reason to own an assault weapon,’" stated Huckabee.
"And I said, ‘Every weapon is an assault weapon. A pencil is an assault weapon if you poke it in someone’s eye.’ And then I really shocked them when I said, ‘AR-15s, I got several of them.’ They were scared to death, I thought they were going to dive under the table. I really did, it was like they were, ‘Oh, he’s a psychopath,’" added Huckabee.
The church audience let out some laughter for Huckabee, who didn't mention that Adam Lanza used a AR-15-style Bushmaster rifle to kill 20 children and 6 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14, 2012, noted Slate.com.
Meanwhile, gun advocates are upset because the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) is considering reclassifying the M855, a popular type of bullet used in the AR-15s, as “armor-piercing ammunition."
The reclassification would be aimed at AR-15 handguns, but gun advocates worry it would affect AR-15 rifles that use the M855. If the reclassification goes through, there will likely be a loophole if the ammo is “primarily intended to be used for sporting purposes.”
