Some churches are trying to raise extra money by renting out their steeples as cell phone towers (video below).
John Britton, of AT&T, told CBS San Francisco: “Church steeples make an excellent location for a cell site. You have nice location on it. It’s giving good connectivity and people don’t even see it.”
The Canyon Creek Presbyterian church in San Ramon, California reportedly earns $30,000 a year for putting a cell phone tower in their church steeple.
Churches will lose part of their non-profit tax exemption, but still come out ahead financially.
Mindy Spatt, of the utility watch dog group TURN, expressed concern: “Churches, as independent non profits, could be unduly influenced by these contracts."
