Greenlining Institute Urges People of Color to Speak Up, Will Host Community Workshops
Today’s release of draft redistricting maps by California’s Citizens Redistricting Commission offers a reminder to Californians that only those who speak up will be heard, policy experts at The Greenlining Institute said today. The commission was sensitive to the community input it received at public hearings held earlier this year, but communities of color showed up in smaller numbers, disadvantaging some from being fairly represented in line-drawing.
The draft maps are available at http://wedrawthelines.ca.gov/maps-first-drafts.html. The Commission plans to hold a series of community meetings around the state to get input and reaction to the draft maps, and will also be accepting public comment by e-mail at [email protected], by fax (916) 651-5711, and by mail to: Citizens Redistricting Commission, 901 P Street, Suite 154-A, Sacramento, CA 95814. The commission’s schedule of hearings and meetings is posted at http://wedrawthelines.ca.gov/hearings.html.
“One thing that’s clear is that when communities turned out to make their feelings known, it made a difference,” said Greenlining Institute Redistricting Fellow Michelle Romero. “Anyone who feels the draft maps don’t treat their communities appropriately needs to speak up now.”
Greenlining will be hosting community workshops around the state to analyze and evaluate the Commission’s first draft maps. The following sessions are now scheduled (note that some details have changed since previous advisories):
