Can you tell I have a thing for alliteration? I think it’s left over from my first-grade teacher teaching me about “Alli the alligator who ate apples and appreciated alliteration.” Anyways, today we’re talking the power of protein powder. Normally, we preach eating whole foods that come from the earth, but with some animal products being so freaky these days, and the importance of protein in the diets of those who work out a lot, I find myself going to protein powders and meal replacements more often these days. They’re quick, taste good and get me the nutrition I need without much fuss. So what protein powders are powering us these days? Glad you asked!
Called simply “PDM” by those who love it and use it, this is one of the most solid and filling protein powders I’ve ever tried. In fact, I like it so much it’s joined my daily morning ritual of water, half breakfast, email, workout, other half of breakfast (a suggestion of Jessica, who is an independent distributor). I mix a couple of scoops of PDM with two scoops of Herbalife’s Protein Drink Mix, some cold water, half a banana, a few berries and boom, baby! I have a delicious breakfast that keeps me going.
With just 110 calories in a serving, PDM gives you 15 grams of protein, just 1 gram of sugar and more than a quarter of most of your vitamins and minerals. And it’s free of gluten and other common allergens. Plus, I’ve noticed that since using it, my cravings for sugar and other not-so-good foods has diminished. Coincidence? Maybe. But I’ll take it!
Vega Shake & Go Smoothie
It’s no secret that we’re Vega fans. (They won a 2009 Fittie!) So when they sent us Vega’s new Shake & Go instant smoothie I was psyched. To prepare, all you do is add two big tablespoons to about a cup of water, shake like a mad woman and chug-a-lug. Just like the PDM mentioned above, it’s quick, easy and perfect after a workout for recovery.
I tried the Tropical Tango and Choc-a-Lot flavors and while they did have that familiar Vega earthiness to them, they weren’t bad once you got used to it and focused on the fact that it’s so darn good for you. And if you do take the extra step and blend the powder with some fruit and some milk, it is tasty. And, with 100 calories in a serving and 3 grams of fiber, 11 grams of protein, probiotic cultures (good for the tummy!) and 2,500 mg of Omega 3-6-9, it really is super food. To Vega and beyond!
