Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump accidentally praised the first responders of the "7/11" terrorist attack during a speech in Buffalo, New York, on April 18 (video below).
"I wrote this out, and it's very close to my heart," Trump said. "Because I was down there and I watched our police and our firemen down at 7/11, down at the World Trade Center right after it came down. And I saw the greatest people I've ever seen in action."
Although Trump clearly meant to say 9/11 instead of 7/11, Trump didn't correct himself during the speech.
However, his spokeswoman Katrina Pierson addressed the gaffe the next day.
"After you've done several events over a short time period, people misspeak all the time -- slip of the tongue," she told CNN on April 19.
Trump won New York's primary on April 19, beating out Gov. John Kasich of Ohio and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas.
And he may have gotten some help from Republican Rep. Peter King of New York, who discouraged New Yorkers from voting for Cruz earlier in April, BuzzFeed News.
During an appearance on the Joe Piscopo Show on AM 970 on April 7, King said:
Let me say something about the New York primary. Any New Yorker who even thinks of voting for Ted Cruz should have their head examined. Really, here’s a guy who refused to sign onto the 9/11 health care act for the cops and fireman. Here’s a guy who talks about New York values.
... New York keeps going forward. We’re tough, and to have some guy like Ted Cruz with cowboy boots walk around criticizing us. Listen, I hope he gets the cold shoulder and other things from every New Yorker.
Send him back where he belongs. He’s a phony, and that was all off the record by the way. I don’t want anyone listening. That was all off the record. ... I just can’t stand that guy.
Piscopo pushed King on possibly supporting Trump, and King replied that he didn't like some of the things that Trump had said. Nonetheless, he noted how he preferred Trump over Cruz:
Cruz is the guy I really don’t like and by the way, John Kasich is a really good guy. John Kasich is [a] good guy.
... I would love to see Trump over Cruz here in New York. To me, the best debate is between Kasich and Trump. Not between Cruz with that smooth talking, how he loves everyone and is gonna wear the armor of God as he’s into battle and all that. Come on. Give me a break.
