Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont mocked Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on May 27 for refusing to debate him (video below).
Trump told late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel on May 25 he would debate Sanders if the TV profits from the event were donated to charity. But on May 27, Trump pulled out, notes POLITICO.
When Sanders heard from a reporter that Trump backed out of the debate, he expressed hope that Trump would change his mind, Raw Story notes:
I hope that he changes his mind, again. Mr. Trump is known to change his mind many times a day. Trump goes around, he's a bully, he's big tough guy. Well, Mr. Trump, what are you afraid of?
Why do you not want to see a debate here in California, and obviously all across this country, on why you think it is a good idea to be trying to divide up our people, to be scapegoating Mexicans, Latinos, Muslims and women and veterans and African-Americans. I want you to tell the American people why you think that's constructive.
An ABC spokesman said the network would donate "any profits to charities of their choice" to air the debate, according to POLITICO.
Richie Hecker, CEO of Traction and Scale, offered to donate $10 million for the debate, while the progressive Internet radio news show, "The Young Turks," pledged $1 million, notes Mediaite.
The Trump campaign explained his decision not to participate in the debate in a May 27 statement, POLITICO reports:
Based on the fact that the Democratic nominating process is totally rigged and Crooked Hillary Clinton and Deborah Wasserman Schultz will not allow Bernie Sanders to win, and now that I am the presumptive Republican nominee, it seems inappropriate that I would debate the second place finisher.
Likewise, the networks want to make a killing on these events and are not proving to be too generous to charitable causes, in this case, women’s health issues.
Therefore, as much as I want to debate Bernie Sanders - and it would be an easy payday - I will wait to debate the first place finisher in the Democratic Party, probably Crooked Hillary Clinton, or whoever it may be.
