Syrian President Bashar al-Assad joined Instagram last week, but his account paints a very different picture of Syrian life than the bloody civil war that has claimed 100,000 lives and displaced more than one million people.
Assad’s Instagram is nothing but smiles, warm embraces, hand-shaking, altruism and philanthropy. He and his British-born wife Asma visit children, the elderly, and the sick.
He also has a Facebook page and Youtube channel. The negative comments on his posts are likely censored, reports CNN. Some critical comments do manage to slip through the cracks.
"This is not the real Syria," one writer posted, reports CNN. "Show as the actual Syria, please."
